Research Interests

From early childhood to adulthood, the cells in our brain and the connections between them are constantly being reshaped. But how do biological changes in the neural tissue shape the way we learn and think? To answer this question, I build biophysically detailed models of human neurons across developmental ages and use these computer models and simulations to explore how our brains mature. 

More broadly, I am interested in using data and machine learning to understand how the brain represents the world around us through the electrical signals within living brain tissue. This work is supported through Wellcome Trust Early Career Award.

I am, furthermore, committed to building the capacity of African research networks. I'm involved in the Computational Neuroscience Imbizo, the UCT AI initiative, I supervise students at the AIMS school, and I organize workshops at the Deep Learning Indaba conference.
