Associate Professor Gladness Nethathe

Anaesthetist and Neurobiology Researcher, Head of the Department of Anaesethsia and Perioperative Medicine

Research Interests

I am an anaesthetist and intensivist whose research examines the injured brain. My work in traumatic brain injury investigates disruptions in cortisol and related pathways to understand their impact on neurological recovery, and to identify potential biomarkers relevant to the African context.

In parallel, I study perioperative neurobiology, including how anaesthetic drugs influence neurotransmitters and how these changes relate to post-anaesthetic recovery. Across these projects, my aim is to reveal overlooked neuroendocrine and neuromodulatory mechanisms that can improve care for patients exposed to brain injury or anaesthesia. These developing projects aim to build and foster interdisciplinary, clinical neuroscience and improve care in populations with a high burden of trauma.
