Research Interests

My current research focusses on theory and applications of Artificial Intelligence. With Prof. Mark Solms and collaborators we are exploring the building AI agents with affective states and characteristics typical of animal and human brains, including system 1 and system 2 thinking and the ability to learn from relatively little information, with anomaly detection being the limiting case. I have a research group focused specifically on AI in the African context and I am also interested in the ethical implications of AI and artificial general intelligence. I was previously the head of the Data Science team at SARAO where we developed advanced AI for imaging and were responsible for providing forecasts for the COVID pandemic in South Africa used in the National Ventilator Program.
