Dr Aayesha Soni

Epilepsy Clinical Researcher, Department of Neurology

Research Interests

I am an internationally trained adult neurologist and epileptologist, one of very few in South Africa, even fewer of which are female. I have specialised expertise in epilepsy surgery, including stereo-electroencephalography (stereo-EEG), vagus nerve stimulation and deep brain stimulation, and I am the only neurologist in South Africa formally trained in stereo-EEG. I am a UCT neurology specialist and MMed graduate, and completed the Richard S. McLachlan Clinical Fellowship in Epileptology in Canada. I have authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications and received multiple international awards for my contributions to epilepsy research and neuromodulation.

My work focusses on precision diagnostics, advanced neurotechnologies, and patient-centred approaches in epilepsy care. By integrating cutting-edge techniques such as stereo-electroencephalography, neuromodulation, and epilepsy surgery into clinical practice, translating innovation into improved neurological outcomes. I also collaborate across disciplines to advance local expertise in highly specialised procedures, supporting capacity-building in South Africa. Through publications, training, and international partnerships, my work prioritises research excellence, knowledge dissemination, and the equitable delivery of advanced neuroscientific care.
