Head injuries - the forgotten epidemic

Approximately 10% of the world's deaths each year result from trauma - reportedly 32% more than the number of fatalities from malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS combined.  Professor Anthony Figaji, clinician-researcher and head of Paediatric Neurosurgery at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital, explains why head injuries are referred to as the "forgotten epidemic" as he and his team research integrative approaches to prevention, intervention and mechanisms of brain injury.  This work has been funded by the Gabriel Foundation and the South African Medical Research Council.
