Dr Rachael Dangarembizi, a proudly black, female, African scientist speaks out about the difficulties she has had walking the research path because of her demographics. She has an inspiring story, having grown up in a township, walking 7km's to get to school often on an empty stomach. Despite all that she has overcome to get to where she is in research she still finds she can be questioned at every opportunity. These hard truths are important to realise and we as a society must do better and push the needle of progress further so that our future neuroscientists need only concern themselves with the science.
