My expertise involves the function of neuroinflammatory mechanisms in brain disorders. My research utilizes a translational research approach to identify neuro-immune targets that functions as potential diagnostic and therapeutic targets for brain disorders in the South African context. My work includes 1) neuroimmune mechanisms in the neurodevelopmental impairments of uninfected children that were exposed to HIV in utero, 2) neuroinflammation and the gut microbiome in the intergenerational transmission of psychological distress on neurodevelopment and behaviour in South African children, and 3) the Neurosciences Institute Brain Bank to study neurobiological and molecular mechanisms of brain disorders.
