A/Prof Nightingale's research shows that the link between HIV and cognitive disorder among people on ARV treatment has been overstated in the literature and that this claim could have damaging effects in terms of increasing stigma against those with HIV, who are already marginalised.

The CONNECT study showed that cognition in people living with HIV, who were on the latest ARVs, show similar cognition to their HIV-negative neighbours.

A new Ingqondo study, led by Nightingale from the NI and generously supported by Race Against Dementia and the Donald Gordon Foundation, will research how inflammation contributes to dementia. It will recruit 250 volunteers of a similar background over the age of 70, half living with HIV and half not.

Additionally, the DROP study in peri-urban Cape Town, led by Professor John Joska, has recruited about 50 participants to collect data on how to design interventions for older people with dementia and HIV in the local context.
