At the recent International Neuroethics Society meeting in Montreal, Canada, Nwabisa Vuyolwethu Mlandu made a big impact receiving a book award for best abstract.

Her talk was entitled 'Detecting Cultural Influences on Social Cognition: The South African-Adapted NEmo Test Battery' and the work is co-authored by Professor Kevin Thomas and Dr Victoria Ives-Deliperi. She spoke about the need for culturally appropriate instruments to measure cognitive dysfunction in clinical populations. In her research she adapted an international scale (the NEmo test battery) that measures social cognition, for South African people who speak isiXhosa, English and Afrikaans.

Nwabisa is currently an intern neuropsychologist at Groote Schuur Hospital and Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital. She also works part-time as a research assistant on the Khula Leap project and AGENDA. She is completing her Masters in Neuropsychology at the Department of Psychology.
