Research Interests

My research focuses on the genetics of psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in African populations, particularly genes that contribute to the risk of schizophrenia in the South African Xhosa population. I also have an interest in calculating polygenic risk scores (PRS) - which are a way to genetically predict an individual's risk of developing a given disorder. I have assessed the predictive accuracy of PRS across several African populations for non-psychiatric disorders, and showed that the predictive accuracy is low in African populations when PRS are derived from European ancestry populations and thus I will be assessing the predictive accuracy of PRS for schizophrenia and bipolar disorders in African populations.
